FROM HOURS TO MINUTES: HOW AI IS SPEEDING UP INDUSTRIAL INSPECTIONS
Before an industrial inspection starts, teams first have to decode the maze of symbols on a P&ID diagram. It’s a necessary step, but painfully time-consuming. Intero - The Sniffers aims to speed up this manual process, with an AI-powered P&ID Scraper. We teamed up with them to develop a tool that automates this process.
"CAN WE AUTOMATE THIS PROCESS WITH AI?"
Intero - The Sniffers is a global player in pipeline integrity management and environmental compliance. They support oil, gas and chemical companies in detecting and quantifying leakages (LDAR), improving pipeline integrity and reducing emissions. A key part of that work? Analyzing piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), which are technical blueprints full of symbols that map out complex industrial systems.
But going through these diagrams by hand is slow, repetitive work. All equipment, such as valves, pipes and pumps, needs to be identified and classified before inspections can even begin. So, Intero - The Sniffers approached Sioux Technologies with a bold challenge: can we automate part of this process with AI?
Fun fact: the name The Sniffers comes from the early days of the company, when specially trained dogs were used to detect gas leaks using their powerful sense of smell. Today, that same mission lives on. Only now, it’s AI doing the sniffing.
THE HIDDEN CHALLENGE BEHIND EVERY INSPECTION
P&ID diagrams are the backbone of industrial inspections. They show how every pipe, valve and sensor connects in complex systems. But interpreting them isn’t simple. Each symbol carries meaning and overlooking just one can lead to flawed inspection plans or missed risks.
For Intero - The Sniffers, manually analyzing these diagrams was not only time-consuming, but also a bottleneck in their workflow. What they needed was a smarter solution. A tool that could read P&IDs directly from PDF, automatically recognize and classify the components, extract relevant metadata and drastically reduce the manual effort involved.
A CUSTOM BUILT PIPELINE
To streamline this time-consuming step in the inspection process, Sioux Technologies developed a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for Intero - The Sniffers: the P&ID Scraper. This AI-powered tool automatically reads and interprets technical diagrams, combining several smart technologies into a powerful processing pipeline:
1. Reading the P&ID PDF
The tool starts by ingesting P&ID diagrams from PDFs, cleaning and preparing them for analysis. It handles variations in layout, format and quality, ensuring reliable input every time.
2. Identifying and classifying the symbols
Next, using computer vision and custom-trained deep learning models, the Scraper detects and classifies all relevant symbols – from valves and pumps to instrumentation – even when elements look remarkably similar.
3. Extracting additional (meta) information from the diagram
Finally, the tool extracts valuable contextual data: tags, labels and connections between components. The result? Rich, structured information ready to use for inspections and reporting.

EARLY RESULTS AND WHAT'S AHEAD
The first version of the P&ID Scraper is now being put to the test at Intero - The Sniffers, and the early signs are promising. Engineers are already saving valuable time by skipping manual symbol mapping and the tool shows potential to streamline preparation for field inspections.
What’s next? We’ll be focused on sharpening the tool even further: capturing concrete time savings and performance metrics, refining features based on feedback from the field, and exploring how the solution can be scaled and integrated into Intero - The Sniffers’ broader workflow.
With active discussions about industrialization and rollout, this MVP is proving to be more than just a prototype. It’s a strong first step toward smarter, AI-driven inspection planning, replacing manual work with speed, consistency and intelligent automation.
