THE USER'S VERDICT: AN ENGINEER'S FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH OUR INDUSTRIAL CHATBOT
When a high-tech machine acts up on the production floor, every second counts. Traditional log analysis is slow and relies too much on senior experts. To break this bottleneck, we developed the Industrial Chatbot.
Reinier, NPI engineer at our assembly facility, has been working with the chatbot during the testing phase of a complex die bonding system. We sat down with him to hear what works, what surprised him, and where he sees room to grow.
THE REAL PROBLEM ISN'T THE DATA
Reinier's role sits in a phase where things tend to get tense: the testing phase, after all modules have been integrated.
"I'm responsible for things like determining the optimal way of setting up a system, while working together with engineers from Sioux and our customers. Writing work instructions, system overview documents, troubleshoot guides. The data really comes into play when a new machine is set up and there is an issue."
That last part is the heart of the problem. When something goes wrong, the people on the floor aren't always the people with the deepest experience.
"It is not necessarily the data that is complex, but rather the system. When you want to have a high throughput with high precision, a lot of things can go wrong. It is very important to be able to read the data and recognize signature behavioral patterns."
For an industry where every minute of downtime costs money, that's not a small ask. It's why senior engineers are so valuable, and why losing access to one when an issue arises can stall a whole production run.
A MOMENT THAT STOOD OUT
During testing, Reinier asked the chatbot a question based on a system overview document he had written himself. The answer surprised him.
"The chatbot really nailed the response. The answer was way better and more clear than the way I wrote it myself in the document."
The tool didn't just retrieve information, it reorganized and reformulated it in a way that was more useful than the original source. For an engineering team that produces a lot of internal documentation, that's a meaningful shift.
Reinier also points to a side effect that's easy to overlook:
"It not only stimulates proper documentation, but it can use multiple formats with multiple writing styles, which can be transformed into clear and concise answers."
"The chatbot really nailed the response. The answer was way better and more clear than the way I wrote it myself in the document."
EARLY VALUE, EVEN BEFORE PRODUCTION
The chatbot has been deployed in production environment, and is under heavy testing before integration in live operations. But Reinier sees the value building up already:
✓ It encourages better documentation practices across the team
✓ It handles multiple formats and writing styles, turning messy inputs into clear answers
✓ Common issues already get useful, well-explained solutions
✓ It transparently says "I don't know" when information is missing — instead of inventing an answer
✓ It creates a sparring partner for the people on the production floor, who is immediately available to help
That last point matters. One of the biggest risks with AI assistants is hallucination: confident-sounding answers that turn out to be wrong. In Reinier's testing, the chatbot consistently flagged gaps rather than filling them with guesses.
"If there is any issue on the floor and there is no engineer or experienced tester available, the AI can already give good descriptions and solutions to common problems."
FASTER ANSWERS, IMAGE SUPPORT AND A FEEBDACK LOOP
Early feedback from our assembly facility is shaping where the tool goes next. Users want responses to be faster, more concise by default, with the option to ask for deeper technical detail when needed. Image processing is high on the list, both reading information from images in documentation, and providing visual references back in answers. And a self-learning feedback loop, where operators can mark whether a suggested solution actually worked, will help the chatbot prioritize the most likely fixes over time.
